Simple Summer Self-Care Tips
Summer is supposed to be all about relaxation, but…
it can be hard to stop and really take that break. Here are some simple self-care tips from the experts to prevent taking on too much when we’re supposed to be slowing way down. (And a real bonus – the tips are all low or no cost.)
1. Get Outside.
A quick way to lower stress is physical activity or being surrounded by nature. A walk in some green space is a double win.
2. Leave Time for Rest
Longer days and warmer weather along with all those fairs, festivals, visitors and other fun summer events can be tempting but it’s o.k. to say no and just relax with a book if that’s what’s best for you.
3. Social in Real Life Rather than Online
Being more present by spending more time with friends and family and less with social media is a proven boost to life satisfaction. How about going for a walk in a park with a friend?
4. Buy Summer Clothes that Fit
We need to give ourselves a body break. If last summer’s clothes don’t quite fit, let’s relax and get some that fit our ‘here-and-now’ bodies. It doesn’t have to be expensive. That friend might enjoy checking out second hand/vintage clothing stores with you.
5. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Dehydration can happen more easily in summer’s heat and humidity with low levels of chronic dehydration leaving us feeling tired and dizzy. Make water intake a habit and top it up with lots of water-rich summer foods like cucumbers and watermelon.
6. Be Sun Savvy
Use lots of sunscreen regularly to protect yourself from certain cancers (with the bonus of reducing the wrinkles and hyperpigmentation signs of aging). Recommendation: apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 every two hours in the sun and after getting out of the water.
7. Find Your Summer Schedule – but Make It a Relaxed One
Summer schedules may be different, but they can still be overwhelming. Some new, enjoyable routines can help us feel more grounded and help us slow down and appreciate summer. Sunny examples to consider: setting time aside for regular movement (like that walk in nature), writing in a journal while enjoying that leisurely, cup of coffee, reading a light book, and/or meditating.
8. Move in Ways You Find Fun
Summer could be a time to change or start an activity that lets you enjoy the outdoors. Maybe it isn’t the right time to go to the gym when the green grass beckons. Consider what you enjoyed doing a kid in those blissful summer holidays. Riding a bike, skipping rope, or swimming at the local outdoor pool could be just as enjoyable as an adult.
